Last week we celebrated children’s day. My news feed was flooded with pics, poems and videos of how everyone wanted to be a kid again. That the childhood was the best time of their lives and how it won’t be same ever again.
Such a depressing thought! Because all I remember about my childhood was how much I wanted to grow up. There were so many restrictions, and you had to follow what others said. Now that you have grown up, why is it that you want to go back? As a kid no one liked school. And now when they don’t have to go to school any more, everyone is talking about how much they miss school. How much they miss the mess food which they hated then.
The problem is, as we grow up, we learn what to do from society. We half-heartedly accept what society thinks is good for us. Now that you have finished school, you must get into a good college otherwise you won’t get a good job and your whole life will be ruined After college, don’t try to do what you love, you must find a job in the biggest multinational possible. Now that you have a job, work hard at it, cause this is the time to make a good impression. And later on you won’t get time as you’ll have a family to support. It goes on with buying a house, getting married, kids, and by the time you realise you never lived for yourself, its very late, and you realise that childhood was the best time of your life.
Let me tell you, it's not easy being a kid. Kids have their own problems. I don’t have a cycle, all my friends have one, or this kid at school beats me and eats my lunch everyday, or my parents make me wear stupid clothes and my friends make fun of me. Sure they seem small to you now, but these problems are as real for them as you worrying about your next installment.
I think we have something now that we didn't have when we were kids. A choice. We can choose to do what we really like. We are done with following what others think was right for us. Why is it that when people ask “How's everything”, or “How's Life”, the most common answer is “nothing new”, “same old shit”. The good news is, it's up to you to change it if you want. Wishing to be a kid again, isn't gonna help.
Don’t take me wrong. I love kids. Kids are awesome. Kids are dreamers. Do you remember what your answer was when people asked you as a kid what you want to become when you grow up? An Astronaut? A Cricketer? A Hacker? Where did the passion go?
As Pablo Picasso said “All children are artists, The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up”. Cause as we grow up, we become practical. We run after "safe" jobs. We dismiss our dreams because they were too childish. What would you have done if there was no one to tell you what you should do after school?
I don’t like children’s day cause its a reminder that childhood is as good as it gets. I refuse to believe that. I refuse to believe that my life is only going to get worse. I refuse to believe that I don’t have a choice. I think the best time of my life is yet to come. That’s what I am living for.
Let us change this. Let children’s day be a reminder of how awesome you were when you were a kid. Let it be a reminder of how you can be that same great kid. How you can dream. How you, have a choice!
